New York City’s climate justice demands exist on three scales: national, state, and city.
At the National Level, we are demanding for Congress to pass the Green New Deal for Public Schools, a 1.4 trillion dollar investment in removing toxic materials from schools and cutting down carbon emissions by 78 million metric tons. This deal will also be an important step toward dismantling systemic racism in education with targeted funding to create a healthy learning environment for all.
At the State Level, we are fighting for the Climate Can’t Wait Package which contains twelve urgently needed climate bills. Included in this package is the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) that will jump-start the transition to an 100% renewable energy economy in New York.
And finally, at the City Level, we are here to put a stop to the construction of the North Brooklyn Pipeline.
The climate crisis is something we all MUST work to prevent and mitigate with radical change. This is our duty to the future and to all the people right now who are on the frontlines of this catastrophe’s impacts.
I got involved with Fridays For Future NYC just this year—it is incredibly welcoming, and we need you to join us in striking every Friday to continue our fight! If you go to @fff.nyc on Instagram, you can find the FFF member form as well as more ways you can take action in the link in our bio.
But there is more we need you to: Climate activism isn’t limited to strikes like these—it is happening everyday all around you. Climate Can’t Wait will be holding an action this April to push their essential legislation, and Extinction Rebellion is holding a 10-day campaign that began on April 13th. There are also critical elections happening, and everyone who can MUST vote in.
Now is not the time to be nihilistic—let’s do everything we can while we still can!
