Selected Poems – Sophia Stylianos

By Sophia Stylianos, Sidwell Friends School

“Planets of Yesterday”

The intertwined vibrant corals of yesterday
Oranges and blues and reds all turning to white gray lifeless lumps at the bottom of the sea
An ocean that is becoming a sea of plastic
Water that used to be blue will be gray black with oil
All of this was alive before humans started the destruction
From the mammoth to the galapagos tortoise there is always something
Another species to destroy another land to discover more oil to drill
But soon there will be none left
There is only one earth
when are we going to start taking care of it

“Tiger Clouds”

I can ride a cloud
Walk on water
Run to the tigers
With the tigers
Catch the tigers raise the tigers become a tiger
All things are living breathing a soul is within them
So when all of us are eventually in the clouds we will all be together
But let the clouds be there
Let them be clean
Let tigers not be extinct

“Melting Earth”

The deer snot melts the universe
The birds tears leak into the salty ocean
The sun’s light lets life live
But the sun’s darkness protects.
