Nuclear Warfare: Testing, Destruction, and Damage

By Em Cochran Nuclear weapons have sparked fascination and often fear in Americans since before the Cold War. From comics and cartoons of nuclear superheroes to the nuances of the current conflict in Ukraine, American media has explored the topic in depth. Despite this myriad of information, the basic history of nuclear weapons is sometimes forgotten.  Two types of nuclear bombs exist–– fission and fusion weapons. While fission nuclear weapons split an atom’s nucleus into smaller nuclei, fusion nuclear weapons, also called hydrogen bombs, combine smaller nuclei into a larger nucleus to produce far more energy. The mass destruction caused by nuclear weapons and the associated nuclear waste can be harmful to both humans and the environment.   Nuclear weapons have been around for eig...

Renewing a Post-War Ukraine

By Kevyn Orr As Ukraine descends into conflict and crisis, an opportunity presents itself. Although unfortunate, it is likely that a large part of Ukraine's energy grid will be disturbed or destroyed. If the nation will need to rebuild its energy infrastructure, the avenue opens to introduce renewables and other forms of clean energy into Ukraine. With assistance from NATO, the EU, and private entities, post-war Ukraine could fully transition to clean and renewable energy, serving as an example for the rest of the world's transition.  Russia transports and utilizes oil and gas to buyer nations across the globe, although these agreements will likely cease to exist post-war. This presents the need for Ukraine to generate its own energy, which could come from nuclear power. Accordi...

War Vehicles Emit Atrocious Amounts of CO2

By Lucas Flaherty The war in Ukraine has killed, displaced, or worried people both inside and outside its borders; the invasion has also harmed the environment as war vehicles release tons upon tons of greenhouse gasses. When people think of greenhouse gasses, they often visualize them coming from cars, trains and factories. War vehicles fail to come up in any discussions about greenhouse gasses because they are not used by day-to-day consumers. Nevertheless, they are not fuel-efficient and can emit grim amounts of greenhouse gasses.  There is a wide range of emissions when it comes to war vehicles; armored trucks are quite inefficient with their six miles per gallon compared to an average car’s roughly 24 miles per gallon. Fighter jets with nuclear capabilities such as the B-2 ...
